Is Your Post Treatment Working for the Mastitis Problems You Actually Have?

Culture first. Choose the post treatment second. Then make sure the cow is actually getting proper coverage.
When it comes to post treatments, many dairy farms automatically reach for iodine. It has been a trusted option for decades and it still has a place on many farms. But the reality is that the best post treatment depends on the mastitis pathogens present in the herd and the conditions those pathogens are thriving in.
Before changing products, the first question should not be, “Which treatment is best?” It should be: “What are we actually fighting?”
Culturing milk samples from clinical cases, fresh cows, chronic high-SCC cows, or problem groups can help identify whether the main challenge is coming from contagious pathogens, environmental pathogens, or something more unusual. That distinction matters. A herd dealing mainly with cow-to-cow spread may need a different prevention conversation than a herd fighting environmental bacteria from wet bedding, manure contamination, or high organic load around the teat end.
Bedding type also plays a major role. Sand, recycled sand, sawdust, straw, manure solids, and compost packs can all create different bacterial pressures. A treatment that performs very well on one farm may not be the best fit on another because the exposure level, organic matter, teat skin condition, and pathogen profile are not the same.
Product choice is only part of the program. It is also a good opportunity to check spray pattern and actual coverage. Nozzles wear out over time, and debris can get stuck in them, which can quietly reduce how much product reaches the teat end.
Not all post treatments are trying to solve the same problem
Iodine-based treatments
A proven, broad-spectrum choice and still a strong fit for many farms. Different iodine concentrations can act at different speeds and provide different lengths of activity, so concentration and label directions matter as much as the active ingredient itself.
Ask: Are we using this iodine concentration because it fits the problem, or because it is what we have always used?
Chlorine dioxide
Worth discussing on farms with high environmental pressure or organic load, depending on the product formulation and how consistently it can be mixed, handled, and applied.
Ask: Does our bedding and teat-end cleanliness suggest we need a different germicide profile?
Chlorhexidine-based treatments
Another option to include in the conversation, especially where the goal is to match product choice to teat condition, pathogen profile, and the farm’s milking environment.
Ask: Would a chlorhexidine-based option fit our mastitis pattern and teat condition better than our current program?
Peroxide and lactic-acid based treatments
Can be a good conversation where farms want to look at non-iodine options, teat condition, and a different product fit. It still needs to match the pathogen profile and farm conditions.
Ask: Are we trying to improve teat condition, pathogen control, or both?
The point is not that one post treatment is always better than another. The point is that the choice should be intentional. Iodine, chlorine dioxide, chlorhexidine, and peroxide or lactic-acid based products can all have a place, but they should be matched to the farm’s actual mastitis challenge, bedding environment, milking routine, teat skin condition, spray coverage, and economics.
That is why the best next step is usually not switching products right away. It is gathering enough information to make a better decision. Culture a few cows. Review the pattern. Separate environmental from contagious issues. Look at bedding management and teat-end cleanliness. Then have the conversation with your Aftermarket Rep and your FMS advisor about what product is the best fit for that farm.
A simple decision flow for the farm
1. Culture selected cows to identify the main mastitis organisms.
2. Sort the pattern: environmental, contagious, or mixed.
3. Review bedding type, moisture, organic load, and teat-end cleanliness.
4. Assess teat skin condition, milking routine consistency, and post-treatment coverage.
5. Check spray pattern regularly. Nozzles wear out, and debris can change coverage without anyone noticing.
6. Discuss options with the Aftermarket Rep and FMS advisor before changing products.
The best post treatment is not necessarily the most familiar one. It is the one that fits the farm.
