The Importance of Horizon Backups

Horizon contains a lot of valuable data for your farm. It is important that it is protected!

Things can go wrong for your Horizon server in a few ways: computer hard drives can fail, viruses and malware can lock up your computer or a thief could steal your computer. Without a Horizon backup, any of these situations could result in a huge data loss. The worst case scenario is you doing your start-up all over again. This is not a good situation!

The good news is Horizon takes backups by default and WCR takes this a step further and adds both a USB stick backup and a cloud backup to OneDrive. Having multiple backups might seem excessive, but it is important for 2 reasons:

  1. Systems failing is why we take backups, so what happens if the backup failed too? Multiple backups increase your security

  2. More backups mean you often have backups to choose from. A more recent backup means less data loss.

So how you know if your backups are working? What do you do about it if they aren't?

Horizon Backups

Here is how to quickly check that your OneDrive backups are working.

- Check your attention list on the Horizon Dashboard. When backups fail, you will see a warning here. Don't ignore it!

- In Horizon, click on Manage, then in the Software box, click on Backup. You will see a list of the scheduled backups. Look for multiple backups (hard drive, USB & OneDrive) and check that they were successfully done recently.

OneDrive

Lastly, we want to be sure some of these backups are being uploaded to OneDrive. If this isn't working, there are no backups outside of your farm office. They also offer the most protection against Ransomware attacks that lock you out of all your files.

Look down in the bottom right of your monitor for a little cloud icon and click on it. You should see that it is signed in, has no errors and a recent backup was uploaded. Often, you will also see an older backup was deleted, this is fine.

Getting Problems Solved

As with any issues you run into with your equipment from WCR, call the service line. Make sure you don't put off letting us know about broken backup attentions or OneDrive errors. Because by the time you have a hard drive failure, it is too late.
